Unlock Your Pain Threshold: The Power of Small Intestine 3 (SI3)

Want a significant boost to your pain tolerance with just one acupuncture point?

While it might sound too good to be true, a study [1] released in February has found evidence to support this.

Pain is a widespread issue, impacting millions daily. Consider these figures:

  • Approximately 20% of adults grapple with musculoskeletal pain every day, encompassing common complaints like backaches and neck pain.
  • 7% endure neuropathic pain, which includes conditions such as sciatica or persistent nerve pain following surgery.
  • A staggering 15% of the adult population suffers from headaches.
  • Others battle pain from less defined sources, like fibromyalgia.

Globally, the numbers are even more striking. It's estimated that around 100 million adults in Europe alone suffer from daily pain. This discomfort significantly impacts quality of life, productivity, and overall well-being, and many people just accept it and take no action.

The Science Behind the Point: What the Study Revealed

The study explored the efficacy of a single acupuncture point in improving pain thresholds. Researchers used three different methods to stimulate the point and measure its effect across 10 different body points:

  1. Sham Laser Stimulation: A non-active laser was used to stimulate the point, serving as a control. As expected, this had no measurable effect on pain thresholds.
  2. Acupuncture Needle Insertion: When an acupuncture needle was simply inserted into the specific point, participants saw their pain thresholds increase by a notable 6 to 24%. This shows that the mere presence of the needle at the precise location initiated a physiological response.
  3. Acupuncture Needle Insertion with Manipulation: The most significant results came when the inserted needle was gently manipulated. This technique led to even greater improvements, with pain thresholds increasing by an impressive 15 to 32%.

Small Intestine 3: Your Go-To Pain Relief Point

The specific point used in this groundbreaking study was Small Intestine 3 (SI3), also known as Hou Xi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While the study focused on acupuncture needles, the principle of stimulating this point for pain relief is consistent with acupressure, which involves applying manual pressure rather than needles. Stimulating this point via acupressure certainly won't do any harm and can offer temporary relief until you can consult a qualified acupuncturist.

How to Locate Small Intestine 3 (SI3):

  1. Make a loose fist with your hand.
  2. Look at the outer edge of your hand, specifically along the pinky finger side.
  3. Find the prominent knuckle bone at the base of your little finger (the 5th metacarpophalangeal joint).
  4. Drop your finger into the depression just behind that knuckle, where the red and white skin meet. This is your Small Intestine 3 point.

Benefits and Uses of SI3:

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, SI3 is a highly versatile point with a wide range of applications, especially beneficial for issues affecting the back and limbs due to its connection to the Du (Governing) meridian, which runs along the spine. It is particularly helpful for:

  • Neck, Upper Back, Shoulder, and Arm Muscular Issues: It's a key point for stiffness, pain, and limited movement in these areas, including conditions like neck stiffness, shoulder pain, and tension in the upper back.
  • Headaches and Migraines: Often used for headaches that stem from neck and upper back tension, or those located at the back of the head.
  • Ear, Eye, and Mouth Problems: Due to its pathway, it's also traditionally used for issues like tinnitus (ringing in the ears), earaches, blurry vision, and mouth ulcers or toothaches.
  • Mental Clarity and Calming the Spirit: Beyond physical pain, SI3 is also known for its ability to clear the mind and help calm anxiety, making it a valuable point for overall well-being.

By understanding and incorporating the stimulation of points like Small Intestine 3 into your routine, you can take a proactive step towards managing daily pain and becoming your own OwNeR – Own your health, Nourish your body, and Renew your well-being.
